IoD Wins for NIFRS Chairperson and Chief Fire & Rescue Officer

There was double success for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) at the annual Institute of Directors (IoD) NI Director of the Year Awards 2018.

NIFRS Board Chairperson, Carmel McKinney OBE was named the ‘Non-Executive Director of the Year’ and Chief Fire & Rescue Officer, Gary Thompson was named ‘Director of the Year for Inclusivity’ at the awards ceremony held on Friday 18 May 2018.

The IoD Awards seek to honour directors at private, third and public sector organisations who go above and beyond to show exceptional levels of leadership and motivation and demonstrate good corporate governance.  Both Carmel and Gary will now go forward to be considered for the UK Director of the Year Awards, which will take place in London later this year.

Gordon Milligan, IoD NI Chairman, said – “Encouraging exceptional standards of management and a commitment to good corporate governance is at the heart of the work that IoD does in Northern Ireland.  The Director of the Year Awards act as a benchmark to local organisations and showcases the immense talent and leadership of our business leaders.  I’d like to congratulate all the winners and those directors that were shortlisted and wish them each continued success for the future.”

Chief Fire & Rescue Officer, Gary Thompson won the ‘Director of the Year for Inclusivity’ –this award recognises leaders who can demonstrate that they have specific initiatives already in place to promote diversity and inclusion.

Carmel McKinney, Chairperson of NIFRS Board, said: “It is a huge honour for both Gary and I to receive these IoD Director of the Year Awards.  The calibre of all those shortlisted and the other winners was exceptional and we are humbled and delighted to have received this recognition.  Thank you to the IoD and the Award sponsors First Trust Bank. We now look forward to representing NIFRS and NI in the UK awards later this year.”

Gary Thompson, Chief Fire & Rescue Officer said: “It is a huge honour that NIFRS received 2 prestigious IoD NI Awards.  Both Carmel and I accept these awards on behalf of everyone in NIFRS and for the work our organisation does in serving our community and keeping people safe; we are proud to lead such a fantastic organisation.  We have been truly inspired by the other directors nominated in this year’s IoD Awards and congratulate all those shortlisted and those who received Awards.”
