ISTSS – Tunnel Safety and Security
14th – 16th March 2018
Tunnels are an increasingly important part of the infrastructure network. They, however, create challenges for traffic and emergency management, fire safety and security against attacks or sabotage. The 8th International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security (ISTSS) will address these important issues. This international conference ISTSS 2018 will be held in Borås, Sweden, 14-16th in March 2018. The symposium is well established in the tunnel fire community and the success of ISTSS is a tribute to the pressing need for continued international research and dialogue on these issues.
The ISTSS regularly attracts over 200 delegates from all parts of the world and represents an arena for researchers to discuss safety and security issues associated with complex underground transportation systems.
The ISTSS Symposium offers an excellent opportunity for experts working with transport, emergency management, risk analysis, infrastructure security, tunnel consultants, system providers, tunnel operation and research to exchange their experiences in an international forum. During two and a half days there will be more than 40 paper presentations. In addition to this each day will start with specifically invited keynote speakers giving inspiring presentations on the themes of the conference.
The keynote lectures will be on: Security issues in relation to tunnels and underground infrastructure (Hans Brun, Sweden); How to determine toxic effects and human behaviour when exposed to fire smoke in underground facilities – challenges and possibilities (David Purser, UK); Fire life safety & tunnel systems – Optimising for a safe and sustainable future (Iain Bowman, Canada); Risk Evaluation and Risk Control in Over-Decking of Road Transport Routes for Dangerous Goods (Johan Lundin, Sweden); Fire Brigade intervention capability and technical trade offs (Allan Skovlund, Denmark); Overview of tunnel fire research (Ying Zhen Li, Sweden).
During each ISTSS conference there is a technical visit. This year the technical visit will be at the RISE fire test laboratory where a model scale demonstration test will be carried out.
New for ISTSS this time is the specific focus on best-practice engineering, i.e. where previous research and experience is formed into innovative solutions. ISTSS 2018 is therefore a perfect opportunity for engineers, researchers, tunnel owners, incident managers, consultants, authorities and others to meet and learn about and discuss these issues.
