Putting fire safety in council homes first

Housing provider, Lewisham Homes has hosted its first fire safety seminar for housing and fire safety professionals.

The seminar was attended by more than 50 representatives from the London Fire Brigade (LFB), the Building Research Establishment (BRE), British Automatic Fire Sprinklers Association (BAFSA), Savills, Lewisham Homes and other housing providers.

Ainsley Forbes, Lewisham Homes Board Chair said:

“Our seminar highlights that we do more than collect rent and fix our residents’ taps.

We brought together a wide range of professionals to consider issues relating to fire safety in residential accommodation.  We’re absolutely committed to ensuring the safety of our residents and every one of our staff has a part to play in this.”

The expert speakers at the event included:

  • Stephen Montgomery, Savills
  • Gary Pryce, LFB
  • Ian Gough, BAFSA
  • Dr David Crowder, BRE

Issues discussed included the hazards and risks associated with fire compartmentation, the benefits of sprinkler systems and the role of the London Fire Brigade.  Dr Crowder shared a powerful case study about the Lakanal House fire.

The seminar forms part of Lewisham Homes’ commitment to proactive fire prevention and protection.  The housing provider is fitting residential sprinklers in its new build blocks, hostels and sheltered housing for older residents.
